Metallica throws an 'insane' surprise show at SXSW

Around 2,100 fans saw Metallica blow the roof off their 'secret' show at SXSW last night. According to NME the crowd was "deafening"  as the band Metallica played 11 songs and two encores. The original idea was to keep the show a secret. Metallica was billed as a Norweign metal band called Volsung. But the secret leaked out early. One manager of the venue said he believes up to 5,000 fans had to be turned away. When the band came out on stage James joked "Surprise! This is the best kept secret in rock and roll. We thought we'd come join you for your party."

At the Metallica message board fans left a few comments:

- "Just got back from this show and what a show it was!! 2,100 were only allowed for sure. The place was packed. they opened with Creppeing, then into For whome the bells, then into Harvester of Sorrow, then into One, then into new shit. Awesome show guys!!! It was cool seeing them hanging out too. I also met Perry Farrell at the show who was with his hot ass wife. Insane to say the least seeing Metallica play a club show like this tonight."
