The family of Bob Marley has taken the first step to licensing the reggae icons image on a number of products. Some of the first products they are considering include Bob Marley hotels, cafes, snowboards, headphones, musical equipment, beer and coffee. "We're open to licensing just about anything," says Bob's eldest daughter Cedella. But Cedella also notes: "If it is not right, we will not do it."
The family has partnered with a private equity firm named Hilco to assist in the merchandise efforts. Cedella insists the licensing deal is primarily to stop bootleggers from pushing Bob Marley everything at everyone: "This is a big business for bootleggers. We want to stop some of the nonsense, and make sure the great stuff upholds our standards. We're in control."
Black-market Bob Marley merchandise is an estimated $600 million business.
