Back in a time known as the 1990s, when surf movies came on VHS and you could "rent" them from the not-chain-surf-shop your friends worked at, surf movies were actually good. They did crazy shit. Tony Roberts started with his groundbreaking videos from Santa Cruz. Josh Pomer just launched The Kill series. (He's on TK8 now.) Taylor Steele was pumping out The Show. And Jesse Schluntz was in SoCal producing his infamous surf-horror films TearDevils.
The three films Jesse created were made of metal, punk rock, chugging gallons of milk until pukage, weird guys in robes zapping surfers with lightning, a Braveheart parody (Waveheart), a cameo by Ozzy, and a lot of hot ladys in the sand. It was great.
Now the guys are bringing it back for one night only, with a special film screening and performance by San Diego rock band Thieves & Liars. Here's an idea of what's goin on:
Get like the puppeteer in 'Being John Malcovich' and enter the mind of Dane Reynolds. Only in this instance you don't get to travel through a door and spend 15 minutes in the brain. This time you just get to read about it.
The California surfboard rider has launched a website chronicling his travels around the world and with the professional surfing circuit. See what trash Dane finds on the beach. See how Kelly Slater uses a camera. Watch musicians play. Travel through all of this without leaving your desk.... check out Dane's blog here.
Go behind the scenes of the Rip Curl factory. See a wetsuit get born. Watch Mick Fanning, Taylor Knox and Owen Wright teach that wetsuit the ways of the world. Download this free copy of Rubber Soul IIright here.
Transworldsurf: I'm looking into the future and this is what the beach will look like next summer. With a little help from Body Glove's 2010 bikini video.
Somehow the guys at Volcom have managed to lose their 50 foot inflatable balloon they were flying over the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach last weekend. The thing just kept flying. The good news if the Volcom Stone balloon lands on or near you they will give you $250 and a box of Volcom gear. They want the balloon back though. We say hold out for more. Tell 'em you'll give it back if Bruce calls and asks.
Hawaiian reggae artist Sashamon brought it on the main stage at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach last weekend. Here he is performing the closer and crowd pleaser Peaceisafiya.
